Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module develops students' awareness of research theories and practices relevant to applied linguistics, itself a broad field. It provides advanced input on key research skills, including appraisal and evaluation of research and scholarship, to promote critical selection and development of a methodology for their own research. A particular focus for the module is to build students' familiarity with a range of traditional and blended approaches to discourse analysis typical of contemporary applied linguistic research.

Syllabus:

The nature of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches in applied linguistic research; the nature of discourse and approaches to discourse analysis; working with language data.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Demonstrate an understanding of key research approaches in applied linguistics; • Critically evaluate and identify appropriate approaches for specific language-related research questions; • Demonstrate an ability to undertake research in applied linguistics, identifying relevant data collection, processing and presentation strategies.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Appreciate the importance of relating responsibly to research participants; • Demonstrate ethical decision making in research settings.

The module is delivered faculty and guest lecturers who have particular expertise in a range of applied linguistic and discourse analytic research methods. It can be delivered fully online in the form of webinars and/or face-to-face inputs. Students will have access to innovative, contemporary research as it emerges, and develop strong research sensibilities and experience.
